Dutch Disease: Resource Riches can be an Economic Curse

One of the things that has always worried me has been the over reliance that we have on the ‘resource’ sector. This has meant that our national policies are easily held to ransom by this sector and a real response to climate change is always going to be difficult – no matter who is running the country!

This over-reliance on resources can be an economic curse – and can create a twin economy. This is known as Dutch Disease and I got the following Opinion Piece published in the Australian Financial Review. It was co-written with NSW Greens Senator, Lee Rhiannon and it is available here…
